There were some anecdotes that scrolling through social media has gotten stale partly due to slop content. Feeling dissatisfied, I thought of looking at the indie websites from the 2000s for novelty. They had low quality clip art, GIFs or skeuomorphic designs but it's part of the charm. It reminds of my childhood to some degree. As I'm working towards finishing my IT degree, I thought now is the right time to make a website to build a portfolio and level up my programming skills while having fun.
I was going to use Neocities because of the simplicity with making website in HTML and CSS but went with GitHub Pages instead because of the option to use JavaScript. At first, I was going to use Jekyll to select any theme available but I ended up making a custom theme with raw CSS. It's common to make minimalistic web designs because they are easy to make but they somehow look sterile or plain. I wanted to take the extra mile by taking inspiration of UI and fonts from my favourites games like NieR:Automata and Outer Wilds. Their aesthetics have a sci-fi, computer-like quality when moving from page-to-page. It fits well with the look I want to go for my website and it adds personality. In recent times, I switched to Codeberg Pages to host this static website since I want to use a lot of open-source tools to save money and practicing Git in a simple environment.
Now that I have laid the foundation of the website, I'm keen to share any topics that I'm interested in. Stay tuned.
